Manual Tong Pre-Trip Safety Checklist
A quick on-screen version of the 4 field-practice inspection points every crew should run before each trip. Check them off as you go.
Tong Dies / Jaw Inserts
Check for worn or chipped dies — they slip under load instead of gripping cleanly.
Snub Line Condition & Length
Inspect for fraying. Confirm the line is tensioned to the length specified for the tong — don’t lengthen it for a non-routine setup without re-checking the geometry.
Counterweight Cables
A failed counterweight changes how the tong swings once torque is released.
Swing Radius Clearance
Confirm personnel other than the tong operator are positioned outside the tong’s swing path before torque is applied.
