The Crossover Footage Calculator

Cross-family, not like-for-like: at what footage does a higher-priced bit stop being the expensive one? Enter one bit from each family, or any two candidates.

Bit A — the cheaper one

Bit B — the dearer one

Enter both bits above.

What this cannot do for you. It assumes both bits achieve the rate of penetration and the bit life you enter, which is exactly the assumption that fails when a rig cannot deliver the torque or hydraulics a bit needs — in one published field programme a mismatched fixed-cutter bit was destroyed and finished at $115 per foot against $77 for the roller cone it replaced. Feed it offset-well figures rather than catalogue optimism, and treat the crossover as the point where the argument starts, not where it ends.
Send your offset data and we will run it on your assumptions →
