Control Roles: Supplier, Purchasing, Quality

When Cast or Machined Components Create Load, Fatigue or Consistency Risk

Often, the first challenge encountered isn’t the term “forge” itself, but rather the discrepancy between the requirements of a load-bearing application and a part processing route selected too late. For example, a shaft, hydraulic cylinder component, valve body, bearing mount, die block, or any other machine part may fall short for the buyer before it experiences any actual service issues; the drawing may fail to specify whether an open die forging, closed die forging, rolled ring forging, or machining from a forged bar is the preferred method.

This ambiguity leads to risks as each process method affects factors such as billet allowance, grain structure, heat treatment requirements, machining stock allowances for CNC operations, accessibility for inspection, and document review. China Welong’s engineers provide an early review at the outset of the quote to address these trade-offs. In essence, while forging can’t fix a fundamentally flawed design, the appropriate forging method can supply the engineer with a better starting material pathway compared to using castings or alternative materials like bar stock.

Buyer Voice Signals We Integrated:

“How can I confirm if it is actually a forged material”; “What material do you use? What tolerances?”; and “The forging shop will not care about the stresses.” These are not price questions first. They are proof, spec, and responsibility questions.

Buyer Concern Cause China Welong Response Proof To Request
Forged part may be substituted with bar stock RFQ asks for material only, not the manufacturing route China Welong provides route confirmation before order release Forging drawing, route note, heat number, inspection report
Fatigue or overload risk is unclear Load case is missing from procurement pack China Welong engineers the RFQ review around application and load direction Drawing, shaft length, bearing spans, surface callouts
Quote delays after supplier review Heat treatment, NDT, and standards were not stated China Welong maps missing items before supplier comparison Material grade, ASTM/API/ASME/ISO reference, NDT level

Forging

For industrial customers, China Welong provides custom forged parts for industrial manufacturing, oil exploration, aerospace, and medical device supply chains. This particular section focuses on industrial forgings, coordinated against the buyer drawing, material and inspection requirements, with the responsible forge identified in the quotation.

Forged Shafts

Forged shafts are reviewed against the buyer drawing, material, heat-treatment and inspection requirements. Where applicable, the quoted manufacturer provides the agreed documentation package.

Applications for these forgings include: hydraulic shafts, pump shafts, gearbox shafts, components for pressure vessels, machine line elements, and large custom-shaped forgings that are governed by engineering drawings.

View Forged Shafts

It’s a common assumption that a broad product range is sufficient in itself; that is not always the case. Even a large, selected forged shaft still requires decisions regarding the manufacturing process, material grade, heat treatment procedure, and inspection points. China Welong conducts this review prior to generating a quote, so the discussion with potential suppliers begins with a shared understanding of the facts.

Reference regarding patent landscape: Google Patents search for “shaft forging billet” provides an example.

Open Die, Closed Die or Rolled Ring: A Drawing-to-Process Selection Matrix

It’s important to understand that open die forging and closed die forging aren’t interchangeable terms and are used to address different requirements specified in engineering drawings. Open die forging is suitable for custom shapes of varying sizes and lower volumes, including unique open die shapes and rolled rings for the oil and gas sector when referenced by API Spec 20B. Closed die forging is appropriate for designs that involve repeated geometries where the expense of the die can be justified and the specifications mandate a closed die process.

This Drawing-to-Process Selection Matrix exists because China Welong engineers the wrong-route risk before supplier comparison. Route mismatch can add weeks of supplier clarification, extra machining allowance, or a process mismatch. This matrix is a trade-off tool, not a sales shortcut.

Route Best fit Common risk What to send in RFQ Authority anchor
Open die forging Large shafts, blocks, rings, heavy industrial parts, lower quantity Too much machining stock if geometry is not reviewed 2D drawing, 3D model if available, material grade, heat treat, UT need API Spec 20B
Closed die forging Repeated parts with shaped die cavity and tighter repeatability need Tool cost before design is stable Annual volume, part revision, machining datum, inspection level API Standard 20C
Rolled ring forging Ring-shaped load-bearing parts, pressure equipment, bearing and gear applications Incorrect ring size allowance before heat treatment and machining OD, ID, height, material, heat treat class, NDT method API 20B rolled rings note
Forged stock plus CNC machining Prototype or custom part where final geometry is mostly machined Buyer expects forging economics from a low-repeat part Stock size, finish allowance, hardness, straightness, 100 mm class features ASTM A668/A668M
Drawing-to-Process Selection Matrix Overview

One common myth is that closed die is automatically better because it sounds more exact. Route choice depends on geometry, quantity, tooling payback, material flow, and inspection access. No single route is claimed best before China Welong checks the drawing, and the cheapest route is not best when inspection access is wrong. Related buyer searches such as 4 types of forging and open-die versus closed-die forging belong in this route discussion, not in a generic definition.

Materials, Heat Treatment and Standards for Carbon, Alloy and Stainless Steel Forgings

Material selection is where many custom metal forging services lose time. Carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel forgings carry different chemistry, heat treatment, corrosion, hardness, and testing routes. A buyer asking for “steel” forces the supplier to guess. A buyer asking for a grade, heat treat condition, mechanical property target, and standard gives the forging supplier a quote path.

ASTM A668/A668M is a general industrial carbon and alloy-steel forging reference. ASTM A182/A182M may apply to forged or rolled alloy and stainless-steel pressure-system components. The quotation identifies the requested documentation and inspection scope.

Materials Heat Treatment and Standards for Carbon, Alloy and Stainless Steel Forgings
Material Family Buyer Question Heat Treat / Test Issue RFQ Control Point
Carbon steel forging Can this carry the load without excess cost? Class, hardness, tensile and yield values must be stated Use ASTM A668/A668M or project standard where applicable
Alloy steel forging Does the shaft need higher toughness or strength? Quench and temper, normalized and tempered, or double-normalized routes affect delivery State heat treatment, mechanical properties, and NDT acceptance
Stainless steel forgings Is corrosion resistance or high-temperature service part of the design? Nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and grade-specific testing matter Use ASTM A182/A182M or another specified stainless standard
Project-specific steel alloy Will a local equivalent be accepted? DIN, GB, ASTM, ASME, and API cross-reference may need engineering approval Confirm substitution rules before supplier nomination

Quality Control and Supply Chain Supervision Before Shipment

Forging quality control isn’t one final inspection. It’s a chain: supplier qualification, raw material review, forging process check, heat treatment record, machining or rough-turning control, nondestructive testing, dimensional inspection, and document pack review. In China, China Welong provides supplier development and management, purchasing supervision, and quality control so the buyer isn’t left with a single late-stage shipment photo.

ASTM A388/A388M states that ultrasonic quality level should be clearly stated as an order requirement when UT applies. That single phrase changes the quote. If the RFQ leaves UT, MPI, hardness, tensile, impact, or dimensional report levels vague, the supplier may quote a lower inspection scope than the application needs.

Control Gate What Can Go Wrong China Welong Check Buyer Deliverable
Supplier qualification Factory capability does not match shaft size or material class China Welong verifies process fit and document readiness Supplier profile and route note

When China-Based Supervised Sourcing Fits Better Than a Standard Local Quote

A local forging manufacturer can be the right answer when the buyer already has a qualified supplier, a stable drawing, and a simple document package. China-based supervised sourcing fits better when the buyer need supplier development, purchasing supervision, and quality control for a custom forged part that crosses process, material, heat treatment, machining, and export paperwork boundaries.

China Welong coordinates supplier choice, standard interpretation, in-process updates, inspection reports and document release; buyer engineering approval remains with the buyer, while the quotation identifies the responsible forge and inspection scope.

Use Supervised Sourcing When

For a part-specific open-die requirement, submit the part drawing, material, heat-treatment and inspection requirements; the selected forge and part-specific range are confirmed in the quotation.

Use a Direct Local Quote When

Drawing maturity, approved supplier status, and a known inspection pack already exist from prior orders.

Do Not Compare Price Alone

Compare route, material, heat treatment, inspection level, document pack, logistics, and 3 revision-control steps before cost.

It’s a natural, but often wrong assumption that buying local automatically equates to buying safe. A quote from a domestic source may have greater risk if there are insufficient details on testing requirements than a China sourcing project that specifies clear supplier and quality checkpoints.

RFQ Guide: What to Send for a Faster Industrial Forging Quote

Your RFQ determines the level of guesswork. The FIA (Forging Industry Association) RFQ Checklist includes material grade, heat treatment, destructive and non-destructive testing, relevant industry specifications, order quantities, expected release schedule, drawings, solid models, shipping instructions and paperwork.

Buyer input reinforces this; drawings alone often leave open expectations around material, holes, bearing surfaces, tolerances, surface condition, and finishing requirements. Because of this, China Welong implements a three-stage RFQ review: a drawing and application assessment; a material and standard path check; then a documentation review for inspection and shipment. Send the items below to get the price estimate.

RFQ Item Why It Matters Example Wording
Finished drawing and forge drawing if available Controls machining allowance and inspection datum Attach 2D PDF and 3D model; mark control dimensions
Material grade and equivalent rules Prevents wrong alloy or unavailable stock AISI 4140 / ASTM A668 Class as applicable, no substitution without approval
Heat treatment and hardness Controls mechanical properties and delivery plan Normalize and temper or quench and temper; target hardness range
NDT and inspection reports Defines quote scope before production UT to ASTM A388/A388M where specified, MPI, hardness, dimensions
Quantity and release schedule Separates prototype, sample, and repeat production economics 2 samples, 20 first batch, annual usage 120 pieces
Document and packing requirements Avoids shipment release delays Mill cert, heat treat chart, NDT report, dimension report, packing photos

Wait for these documents to be in view before requesting your custom quote. We’ve structured the China Welong RFQ to minimize thin scopes that result in add-on charges later for machining, testing or paperwork.
